Lansing School District

Eastern High School

Lansing, Michigan

A source of regular complaints around Lansing School District's Eastern High School used to be the stifling hallways; the 1928 building lacked air conditioning. In 2019, returning students started classes in a newer, much cooler building. The former Pattengill Middle School was adapted into the new high school. The facility now includes an expanded cafeteria, larger office space for student services and the community clinic, and remodeled classrooms to accommodate group learning.

The project brought with it two entirely new building additions: an auxiliary gym and fitness room as well as a classroom wing with high-tech science labs. Elements from the former building, such as select light fixtures and bricks, were carefully transported to the new site to preserve the school’s long heritage. Robust internet and air conditioning, however, are welcome changes.
