West Middle School Renovation

Portage Public Schools’ 1970s-era West Middle School building underwent significant improvements to become this cutting-edge learning environment. The district acknowledged that with two new middle school buildings planned, this existing middle school building would need to offer the same level of opportunities and services for the renovation to be considered successful. C2AE designed and implemented improvements to the existing facility, aiming to make the space as good as new.

West Middle School received air conditioning, something the district considered essential for any school facility in 2021. Extended learning spaces, new STEAM program labs, an auxiliary gym, avenues for natural light, a maker space, a media center, and two new walk-in coolers were all among upgrades. The fire alarm system was replaced, as were controls, boilers, and ADA plumbing fixtures. Site improvements included the addition of a parent drop-off at the main entrance, parking lot resurfacing, and upgrades to the site lighting and tennis court drainage.
