I-96 Road Improvements

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Since 2020, C2AE has worked with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Grand Rapids TSC to complete almost seven miles of road improvements on I-96, wrapping around the north and west sides of Grand Rapids. Under two contracts, C2AE utilized different maintenance of traffic (MOT) methods to construct the projects in a safe and judicious time frame.

The first project resurfaced I-96 from east of Bristol Avenue to West River Drive, along with the ramps at the M-37 (Alpine Avenue) Interchange. To reduce traffic congestion during construction and to provide a safer work zone, resurfacing was done during the off-peak hours and at night. Single lane closures were utilized to construct the mainline pavement and nighttime ramp closures were used to construct the ramps.

In contrast, resurfacing five miles of I-96 from Monroe Avenue to Leonard Street utilized a short term direction total closure. Traffic was diverted to US-131 and I-196, while eastbound, then westbound I-96 underwent improvements. This process allowed the construction crew to construct the expansive stretch of road safely and efficiently without adjacent freeway traffic. Each directional closure was in place about 10 days.
