G.A.R. Island Park

Eaton Rapids, Michigan

The historic Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Island Park is a two-acre island, one of many islands within the Grand River in the City of Eaton Rapids. This park is closely tied with the community’s culture and events. With the reconstruction of sea walls and a pedestrian bridge replacement on this important island, Eaton Rapids is aiming to spark economic development for the whole region.

This project also constructed a new walkway system to the recreation center and replaced playground equipment. In addition, work enhanced connectivity to the city’s trail network for pedestrians and cyclists. Two ADA-compliant fishing and observation piers were added, and the boardwalk features better lighting for improved user safety. Rejuvenated rain gardens give the stormwater management system an edge and make the whole park more sustainable.
