30 Questions to Ask an Architect in an Interview
When embarking on a new project, whether it's at a school, a municipal building, or a manufacturing plant, finding the right architect is crucial.
A request for proposals can provide you with some of the information you need to make a decision, but often a face-to-face conversation is the best way to ensure that the architect you choose will align with your vision.
So what questions should you ask to draw out the most insightful responses? We've compiled a list of 30 questions that will help you assess experience, design philosophy, project approach, and communication style.
General:
What do you think sets you apart from other architects we are considering?
With whom from your team will we work with regularly?
How familiar are you with our community?
Have you completed projects with your proposed subconsultants in the past?
Design:
How would you describe your design philosophy?
How do you balance aesthetics with functionality in your designs?
How do you plan to integrate the project with its surrounding environment and community?
How do you balance creativity with practical constraints like budget and site limitations?
What are the key phases of your design process?
How will the scope be identified and managed by your team?
How do you handle changes or revisions to the project scope?
What software or technology does your team use during the design process?
How do you stay current with industry trends and advancements in architecture?
Project Approach:
What types of deliverables can we expect throughout the project?
How often will we need to meet for your team to accomplish milestones?
How do you ensure that the design aligns with our budget and timeline constraints?
How do you manage project timelines and ensure deadlines are met?
How do you handle unexpected issues or delays during the project?
What is your process for managing project costs and avoiding budget overruns?
How confident are you that this project can receive LEED certification?
If the assigned project manager is no longer able to lead the project, how will your team address this?

Communication:
How do you typically collaborate with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders?

Before you go into the interview, remember to decide on your selection criteria. After all, these questions are only half the discussion. Think about a good, better, and best answer to each question.
