Village of Heuvelton

Water System Improvements

Heuvelton, New York

The Village of Heuvelton was established in the late 1800s, but the area has been inhabited by people for far longer. When the village initiated water system improvements that excavated century-old infrastructure, the construction crew proceeded with caution. The team was aware that this site had temporarily served as a cemetery many years ago.

Shortly there after, the discovery of human remains halted construction progress. A collaborative effort between C2AE, SHPO, USDA, the Oswegatchie people, the local authorities, and Saint Lawrence University led to the determination that the remains were not Native American in origin. They were respectfully re-buried in a new village cemetery.

The $3.5 million construction project replaced a deteriorated 1924 elevated steel tank with an elevated composite 250,000-gallon tank that incorporates water treatment equipment and laboratory space inside its concrete pedestal. A new well pump and 8,100 LF of 8 to 10 in. water main were also constructed.
