Shoreline Stabilization

Boyne City, Michigan

As is the case in many lakeshore communities, erosion often follows high water levels in the City of Boyne City. The community contracted C2AE and Armstrong Environmental for three projects that would mitigate the worst of the recent damage:

N. Lake Street Crossing of the Boyne River: Embankment areas along the river were heavily eroded. The team facilitated the removal of failing sidewalks, handrails, and the existing armor system (a stabilizing measure designed to prevent erosion). A retaining wall was added, along with a new handrail system with flower boxes. New underground conduits were put in place to house electrical service and irrigation lines.

Peninsula Beach and Tannery Park: The team provided design and construction services for new armoring systems.

Lower Lake Street: An existing outfall pipe—installed several years ago, when lake levels were at an all-time low—had become totally submerged and disconnected. The team designed upstream modifications to the outfall system, which allowed for the removal of the disconnected portions of the pipe.
