Wastewater Treatment Plant
Escanaba, Michigan
The 2019 wastewater treatment plant improvements project upgraded the headworks by incorporating automatic fine screening. A new fourth raw sewage pump was installed and the existing aerated grit process replaced with a new vortex grit removal system. The plant also received a new primary treatment unit process to replace the failing 1937-era process.
The existing activated sludge secondary treatment process was improved with the addition of one new aeration tank and one new final settling tank. In addition, the project improved the existing digital SCADA system and increased the hydraulic capacity of the outfall sewer with booster pumping.
The decaying masonry building veneer was restored as part of structural, safety, and aesthetic upgrades. Revisions to existing administrative building’s layout enable the space to support staff work activities better. Finally, a new storage and maintenance garage house the plant’s equipment.
