Spring Lake District Library

Renovation

Spring Lake, Michigan

Spring Lake District Library’s 34,500-square-foot facility serves a community of 19,500 residents. Since its original construction in 2003, the library needed updates to better meet the evolving needs of its visitors. C2AE’s design team conducted a study of the library’s spaces, focusing on areas like study rooms, the teen and youth sections, and staff workspaces. They also reviewed the building’s finishes, furniture, and signage.

C2AE provided options for minor to major updates and worked closely with the library to create a phased approach for the project, along with a practical funding plan. In 2024, the newly renovated library reopened with several new features: a welcoming entrance, a small storytime stage in the children’s area, an outdoor play space, more quiet areas for focused work, a makerspace/STEM room, a flexible teen area with gaming equipment, and a reoriented front desk to enhance security and service.

The renovation also honors Spring Lake’s lakeside setting, with design elements like a mural behind the children's stage, wooden seagulls in flight, and a decorative boat in the common area, celebrating the local environment.
