Hastings Public Library
New Facility
Hastings, Michigan
As the first and only LEED Gold library in the State of Michigan, Hastings Library is a trail-blazer for sustainable library design.
The exterior envelope relates to the building’s Main Street USA context while still providing energy savings well beyond the standard level building. Other sustainable design features include sun screens for daylight control, a four-element, high-efficiency window system, light shelves to bounce daylight deep into the interior, high-performance roof and wall systems, high-efficiency lighting and plumbing fixtures, a recycle center for library waste, a low-velocity floor discharge HVAC system, a rain garden for filtering site contaminants, and a roof garden. Recycled, refurbished, and sustainable materials are sprinkled throughout the library, from the carpeting to the chairs and the desks to the wall coverings.
A prime example of the importance of incorporating productivity culture into the design process, the Hastings Library proves that the right skills paired with the right tools can produce spaces that are attractive, economically sound, and kind to the environment.
