Detroit VA - Mental Health Clinic

This project involved the design of a replacement Mental Health Clinic for The Department of Veteran Affairs that was to be constructed in an unfinished space within the hospital. This new unit was programmed to accommodate the following mental health treatment programs:

  • Mental Health Clinic
  • Mental Health Primary Care
  • Psychology
  • Compensated Work Therapy
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • MH – ICM

To aid in the patient’s recovery, individual and group therapy spaces were provided along with the requisite administrative and clinical support functions to ensure the patient’s well-being.

The project included new digital HVAC controls, plumbing, and air distribution systems, as well as new mechanical infrastructure. Energy recovery was utilized for the new mechanical systems.

Planetree concepts were incorporated into the design, including a prominent waiting area with large atrium, wood-look flooring and abundant natural lighting. Subtle adjustments in lighting help illuminate the patient’s path of travel and highlight important way-finding landmarks along the way.
