LANSING, MI—June 10, 2010—C2AE, the engineering and architectural firm responsible for the design of the new Motz County Park, will participate in the grand opening celebration on Saturday, June 12th. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and several family activities to follow. C2AE has managed and designed several Clinton County building projects in the past, and has vast experience in site development and the design of facilities that adhere to the American Disability Act (ADA) requirements, which was of utmost importance for the Motz County Park project.
The new Clinton County park, located four miles north of St. Johns, Michigan, incorporates Universal Access (UA) features throughout, and its outdoor recreation facilities are accessible to all residents and visitors of the County, regardless of age or ability. In addition to the Clinton County Parks & Green Space Commission and the Commission’s UA Committee, many other people contributed to the development of the innovative design features of the park, including the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the recreation consultant, Access Recreation Group, and C2AE.
Several park features and amenities that make Motz County Park unique include: a 50’ x 30’ beach house, a new entrance drive, parking lot, and pathways, a group pavilion, a lake and swimming beach, and a fishing pier, all of which are wheelchair accessible. There are several advantages to the design of the beach house, all of which meet or exceed ADA accessible floor area and design standards. The beach house has seven unisex restrooms and two additional rooms equipped to serve the developmentally disabled, as well as a storage room for wheelchairs.
The pavilion has capacity for large or small group functions, and is designed with a central service area with higher counters to accommodate wheelchair users. All picnic tables also utilize a new “universal access” design with a combination of side and end entrance tables. Formerly a gravel pit, the 15-acre lake and swimming beach area was transformed into a safety engineered swimming beach that alleviates hidden hazards normally associated with gravel pit lakes, and includes a concrete area for wheelchair users to observe and/or transfer into and out of the water.
The Motz County Park project was highlighted in the Winter 2010 issue of the MRPA PROfessional Quarterly publication. To read the entire article, visit the News & Awards section of MRPA website: www.mrpaonline.org.
