City of Gaylord

Downtown Streetscape

Gaylord, Michigan

Several years of planning, schematic design, public meetings and input, fund raising, and grant applications culminated in the eventual revitalization of the two main downtown corridors in the City of Gaylord—both of which are state trunklines. Significant pedestrian safety and streetscape improvements were implemented, including a lane reduction from 4 lanes to 3, sidewalk widening on S. Otsego Avenue, curb bump outs, mid-block pedestrian crossings, and pedestrian refuge islands.

The water main and related services were replaced down the entire length of the project. The sanitary sewer was also replaced and the storm sewer was improved to accommodate the new curb layouts. A new, concrete sidewalk with stamped, colored concrete accents, street lighting, and new tree planter boxes complete the aesthetic of a traditional northern streetscape. The irrigation system and new mast arm type traffic signals at two intersections, however, are completely modern.
